Winter/Spring 2011 : Highlights of a busy studio
This winter/spring session in the studio has been hopping with over 60 pottery enthusiasts sharing the studio over the course of the season!
Penguin sculptures, crab tiles (on display at the Vashon Bookshop) and rock bowls with the preschoolers from the Barbie School…
a lovely afternoon in the studio with friends making sun plaques from multi colored stoneware clay bodies (on display in the Vashon Bookshop hallway)….
a high energy after-school kids class sculpting alligators, constructing dream houses and “sgraffito”-ing fish banks with great style (“sgraffito”: carving through one color to the color, or ground, below)…..
two full classes of adults and a teen class all working with earthenware clay this session and experimenting with various surface design techniques. Everyone has been very productive and enthusiastic, building slab boxes (on display at the Heron’s Nest for the month of April) many unique slump molded plates, and throwing pots on the wheels.….
The studio is full of color!!!
The Vashon Art Tour is held twice a year—always on the first two weekends of December and the first two weekends of May.
For many local artists, the Art Tour is an important and consistent vehicle for presenting their latest body of work in a venue that is self determined and personal. The artists depend upon the local community to provide a sounding board and a direct market for their ongoing work.
For the public, the Art Tour provides a unique opportunity to share in the development of artists who we have seen grow over time…and, the chance to meet some artists who are new to the Vashon art scene…
The concept of selling art directly from the studio offers a fascinating and educational experience for visitors, who will be interested to see the artists’ tools and workspaces, and learn about the processes involved.
“Do you still love clay?” asks a friend recently.
“Yes. Yes, I still do.”
This is an irresistible material. My hard working hands, often overworked these days, nonetheless can’t stay out of the stuff. The kids’ fingers are immediately there-- poking, pinching, making something…
We just got done making 91 ducks over at the fourth grade. This was a truly ambitious project requiring determination, cooperation, focus, hard work, humor and humility. We approached the material, sometimes awkwardly. We worked extra hard on the rough spots, smoothing and reinforcing as needed. We applied our knowledge of our subject, sought out new information, observed carefully and created original ways to express what we saw. We stretched slabs, coiled necks, pinchpotted heads, modeled beaks, added mohawks, painted carefully, sgrafitto-ed feathers, crafted unique touches into our sculptures. Dried them slowly. Handled them with care.
I think that we all pretty much fell in love with the ducks. And many of us will get together again to make something out of clay. It’s really good stuff.
