Spring 2017 Studio Sale

"Liz Lewis and Friends"

We will be studio #14 on the Spring 2017 Vashon Island Art Studio Tour, spanning the first two weekends of May, the 6th-7th and 13th-14th.

Download a map at VashonIslandArtstudioTour.com

Liz has been at her wheel, throwing and painting ever-more-colorful dinnerware, serving pieces and bakers.  A batch of terra cotta planters.... and, a new series of raku vases with metallic and crackled glazes showing the marks of the fire!

Marla Smith has a lovely and engaging series of porcelain pots coming out of the kiln!  She is continuing to develop her slab work, always with function in mind.  Delicate cups, elegant butter jars with soft color and rolled patterns...really fun to use!!!

Karen Fevold's method is time consuming but well worth it!  Wheel thrown cups and bowls bowls are dipped in white slip, and designs are then carved (sgraffito-ed) through the white and into the red clay below.

Shop for a gift... put together a new set...add to your collection...best selection!

Summer 2016 Studio Tour

“Liz Lewis and Friends”

Studio #13 on the Tour!!

I’m so happy to be opening my studio for the Summer 2016 Vashon Island Art Studio Tour!

I am back to making pots again, and I look forward to seeing you! My two studio mates and I have been enjoying a productive season in the studio together.

June 18-19 & 25-26, 10am-5pm

Marla Smith is back in the clay world, designing, texturing, constructing and embellishing her wonderful porcelain pots—tapas trays, butter dishes, cups, bowls, cups, plates, vases, salt and peppers and more!

Gorgeous!

Karen Fevold has developed a wonderful series of mostly wheel thrown terracotta dishes— pitchers, plates, bowls, mugs and more all dipped in slip and carved with variations on a theme-- “feather”ware!

Well crafted and lovely!

Spring 2014 Studio Tour

SORRY!

For the first time ever, I will not be open for Art Studio Tour this spring.  I have been struggling with some repetitive strain injuries, and am needing to pay attention!  There will be  no inventory at my studio but there will be a bit of a supply at the Heron's Nest, which is stop #17 on the Tour.  Check it out! I'm attaching the e-vite for Tour as well--maybe I will see you out and about!

Thank you for your support!

Finding Center

As a predominately wheel throwing functional potter, I have a lot of experience with the concept of finding center!

The pieces I have made for this show, though, are all hand built from slabs of clay.

With the platters, embellishments include the use of stamps, roulettes (rolling stamps), and sprigs (outies). I really enjoy pattern and symmetry, simple variations on a theme, growth and expansion through concentric circles of color and brushwork, trying to allow the different elements to get a lively dialogue going!

For the raku vessels, I have started with a slab built cylinder, and then darted/reshaped the round toward geometric, multi-sided forms, corners pushing out, giving evidence of the volume within. I’m also interested in the play between the organization of the various elements (loops, rays, wax resist patterns, appliqué) and the spontaneity of the raku process.

Creating this show with Brian and Penny has been a similar interplay of common themes and contrasts. A great conversation!

Liz

Empty Bowls—An Artful Celebration of Sharing!

The Community Meal Program, sponsored by the Vashon Social Services Network, is pleased to announce there will be an opportunity to dine on a simple meal of soup and bread on Friday evening, November 8th at the Presbyterian Church.  Island artists, young and old, under the enthusiastic coordination of local potter Liz Lewis, have contributed hand crafted bowls for the event.  In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the bowls empty of food around the world.

Clay campers pitched in!

The Vashon Island Art Studio Tour

The Vashon Art Tour is held twice a year—always on the first two weekends of December and the first two weekends of May.

For the last 30 years a consistent but fluid group of island artists have shared a commitment to developing the Tour as a cooperative and sustainable way to show and sell their work.

On the Art Tour visitors will see extraordinary art exhibits put on by the artists themselves in a variety of venues -- studios, workshops, gardens, a yurt, an old auto repair shop, a restaurant, at least one hallway, and several established retail shops and galleries.

Some studios will have demonstrations going on throughout the weekends.  Visitors can watch a Northwest Native carver at work, observe the art of Ukrainian egg decorating, blow their own glass ornaments, and see pottery wheel throwing demonstrations.

Invite a friend, cross the water and enjoy a day or weekend of art on beautiful Vashon Island.  It's just a short ferry ride from West Seattle (Fauntleroy), Tacoma (Point Defiance), or Kitsap (Southworth):
